Types of Wedding Films Explained: A Simple Guide for Toronto Couples

When you start looking into wedding video, the words come at you fast. Highlight film, feature film, ceremony edit, same-day edit, engagement film. It is easy to feel like you are supposed to already know the difference.

You are not. So here is a plain guide to the main types of wedding films, what each one actually is, and how to tell which ones belong in your day. We film all of these across Toronto and the GTA, so the examples below come from real weddings, not a brochure.

The Short Version
  • Highlight film: a short, moving recap of the whole day, up to five minutes. The one everyone shares. Included in every one of our packages.
  • Feature film: a longer story, ten to fifteen minutes, with more of the people, the vows and the speeches in full.
  • Ceremony and speeches: the full ceremony and the toasts, edited cleanly with real sound. Nothing cut for time.
  • Engagement film: a relaxed shoot before the wedding. A lovely film on its own, and great practice for being on camera.
  • Proposal film: the moment you ask, captured discreetly, often as a surprise.
  • Same-day edit: a short film cut on the wedding day itself and played back at the reception.

Now the longer version, one at a time, with a real example of each.

The highlight film

The highlight film is the one most couples picture when they think of a wedding video. It is a short edit, up to five minutes, that moves through the whole day: getting ready, the ceremony, a few lines from the speeches, the first dance, the quiet moments in between. It is set to music and the real sound of the day, and it is built to be watched again and again.

If you only get one film, this is it. That is why it is included in every one of our packages, from Essentials up. It is also the film you will actually send to family and post online, so it does a lot of quiet work.

The feature film

A feature film is the longer version of your story, usually ten to fifteen minutes. Where the highlight is a fast, emotional recap, the feature lets the day breathe. There is room for more of the people who came, more of your vows, and the speeches carried further rather than trimmed to a single line.

Couples who choose a feature tend to be the ones who know they will want to sit down and watch the whole thing on an anniversary, not just share a clip. It comes with our Complete package, and it can be added to any package as well.

Ceremony and speeches

Highlight and feature films are edited stories. Ceremony and speeches films are something different: the full moments, kept in one piece. The complete ceremony, from the walk down the aisle to the first kiss. The toasts in full, with the jokes that landed and the pauses that did not need filling.

This is the film families come back to most, because it holds the words exactly as they were said. Nothing is cut for pacing. We record clean audio so you can actually hear the vows and the speeches, not a muffled version of them.

The engagement film

An engagement film happens before the wedding. It is a short, relaxed shoot, often at a spot that means something to you, and it becomes a lovely little film on its own.

It also does something practical. Most people feel stiff in front of a camera at first, and the wedding day is not the moment to get comfortable for the first time. An engagement shoot lets you get used to how we work while nothing is at stake, so on the wedding day you already trust the process. If you are weighing it up, we wrote more about that here: why you need an engagement video. It is included free with our Classic and Complete packages.

The proposal film

A proposal film captures the moment you ask, usually as a surprise. This one takes a little planning between us and whoever is helping keep the secret, and we film from a distance so the moment stays real. If you are planning to propose somewhere in Toronto or the GTA, this is worth sorting early.

A few smaller pieces

Two more terms you will run into:

  • Same-day edit: a short film we cut on the wedding day itself and hand over in time to play at the reception. It is a genuine surprise for your guests, and it is available as an add-on.
  • Raw footage: the unedited clips from the day, delivered as a single compiled file. Some couples like having everything, and it is included with our packages.

So which ones do you actually need?

Here is the honest answer: almost every couple starts with the highlight film, because it is the one you will reach for most. From there it comes down to how much of the day you want to be able to revisit.

  • Want a beautiful recap and not much more? The highlight film on its own is plenty.
  • Want to hear the full vows and speeches again someday? Add ceremony and speeches, or step up to a package that includes them.
  • Know you are the type to watch the whole story on an anniversary? A feature film is worth it.
  • Want to feel relaxed on the day and get a bonus film out of it? Add an engagement shoot.

You do not have to decide all of this alone. The clearest next step is usually to look at real films and see which format speaks to you, then talk it through. Our packages lay out what comes with each one, and if you are still weighing whether video belongs in your budget at all, this is a fair read: should you add videography to your wedding. For the money side, we keep an up to date guide on how much a wedding videographer costs, and if you are comparing studios, here is how to choose a wedding videographer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wedding highlight film?

A wedding highlight film is a short edit, up to five minutes, that recaps the whole day set to music and the real sound of the moment. It is the film most couples share and rewatch, and it is included in every Silver Leaf package.

What is the difference between a highlight film and a feature film?

A highlight film is a short, fast recap of the day, up to five minutes. A feature film is a longer story, ten to fifteen minutes, with more of the people, the vows and the speeches shown in full. Many couples get the highlight and add a feature if they want the complete story.

Do I need a feature film?

Not everyone does. If you mainly want a beautiful recap to share, the highlight film is enough. A feature film makes sense if you know you will want to sit and watch the whole story on an anniversary rather than a short clip.

How long is a wedding highlight video?

Most wedding highlight videos run three to five minutes. Ours are edited to fit the day rather than a fixed length, so the film feels complete without padding.

What is a same-day edit?

A same-day edit is a short film cut on the wedding day itself and delivered in time to play at the reception. It is a surprise for your guests and available as an add-on.
