Why You Need an Engagement Video (And How It Works)
When you think about wedding videography, your mind naturally jumps to the big day—the vows, the first kiss, the speeches, and the packed dance floor. But the truth is, your story together didn’t start on your wedding day, and your wedding film shouldn’t necessarily start there, either.
Engagement videos (often called pre-wedding films) are becoming increasingly popular for modern couples. Far beyond a simple video portrait, these short cinematic pieces capture you in your everyday element. Here is why an engagement video is the perfect addition to your wedding website and your overall wedding experience.
1. Break the Ice and Get Comfortable on Camera
Let’s be honest: having a camera pointed at you can feel a little intimidating. At Silver Leaf Weddings, our mantra is "Comfort Above All," and an engagement shoot is the perfect low-pressure environment to break the ice.
Spending an afternoon filming with Dario and the team gives us a chance to get to know each other before the wedding day. You get to see how we work, and more importantly, you get to experience how effortless and unobtrusive our documentary style truly is. By the time your wedding day arrives, you won't be worried about the cameras at all—we’ll just be friends capturing your celebration.
2. The Ultimate Save-the-Date
While paper invitations are a classic, a digital save-the-date featuring a cinematic short film of you and your partner takes the excitement to a whole new level.
Embedding your engagement video on the homepage of your wedding website (like your Knot, Zola, or Squarespace page) instantly personalizes the guest experience. It sets the tone for your upcoming celebration and gives out-of-town guests who might not see you often a beautiful glimpse into your relationship as it is right now.
3. A Highlight for Your Wedding Reception
Your engagement film isn't just for the internet. Playing your engagement video during your wedding reception is a fantastic way to entertain your guests.
Whether it's looping quietly on a screen near the bar during cocktail hour or played right before you make your grand entrance into the reception hall, it adds a unique, highly personal touch to the evening. It allows your guests to see the quiet, intimate connection you share before the lively party gets underway.
How Our Engagement Shoots Work
We like to keep the process as simple, fun, and flexible as possible. Here is what you can expect:
The Session: You get a dedicated 2-hour time slot with us. We use this time to capture genuine interactions, laughter, and quiet moments together.
The Final Film: We take that footage and craft a beautiful, cinematic 1-to-2-minute video that is easy to share, upload, or loop on a screen.
The Location: The setting is entirely up to you! You can choose any spot within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) that holds meaning for you. If you aren't sure where to go, just ask us! We have plenty of recommendations based on whether you want a lush, natural environment (like Scarborough Bluffs or High Park) or a sleek, urban backdrop (like the Distillery District or the Financial District).
The Coordination: We are highly flexible with scheduling. We can coordinate to film your video alongside your photographer during your official engagement photoshoot, or we can plan a completely separate day dedicated just to video.
How to Get Your Engagement Video
We believe so strongly in the value of getting to know our couples before the big day that we’ve integrated it directly into our most popular offerings.
At Silver Leaf Weddings, we include an Engagement Video completely for free in any package that includes two videographers. That means if you book our Gold or Diamond packages, this beautiful prelude to your wedding story is already covered.
Your engagement is a distinct, fleeting chapter of your life. It deserves to be remembered just as beautifully as the day you say "I do."

While we might give you some gentle direction, there is no need to memorize lines or speak directly into the camera unless you specifically want to include an interview or read letters to each other. The goal is simply to be yourselves.
