Leah and Alexander's June wedding at Casa Loma was built by a planner who runs a schedule to the minute, and it shows in the best way: a morning at the St. Regis, a Rolls Royce to the castle, a first look on the grounds, a six o'clock ceremony in the Conservatory, an aerialist at cocktail hour, and dinner in the Library with a string quartet playing.

This is the highlight film from that day. We film documentary style, without re-staging, and a schedule this tight is a gift for that: when everything has a time, nobody is waiting on us, and we can spend the day watching people instead of watching the clock.

The story of the day

Leah's morning was at the St. Regis on Bay Street, and it was a long one: makeup from before seven, hair from nine, the florist arriving at noon with the personal flowers, and the planner arriving right after to lay out the details for flat lays. We arrived at one, with the photographers, for the details, the last touches of hair and makeup, and the bridesmaids still in their pyjamas. Then Leah got into her dress with her mom, portraits with her mom, and the two of them went down to a Rolls Royce waiting outside the hotel.

Alexander got ready at home downtown with his groomsmen and his parents, and the second half of our team was there for the same stretch: his details, the suit going on, and photos with the guys and his family. A limo bus collected them at two, swung past the hotel for the bridesmaids, and everyone reached Casa Loma about twenty minutes after Leah did.

The first half hour at the castle was hers alone: the planner walked her to the bridal suite, and she had bridal portraits with no one else in the frame. At half past three, Alexander was put in position and she was walked out to him for the first look. Couple portraits followed, then the bridal party, then family photos with parents, siblings, and grandparents. While that was happening the castle was filling up behind them with florals, tabletop rentals, signage, a champagne tower, a cake, and two sets of musicians doing sound checks. The ceremony was at six in the Conservatory, with a string duo playing the processional. The Conservatory is the room at Casa Loma that photographs like a greenhouse and films like a cathedral: glass overhead, stone underfoot, and light that changes over the half hour a ceremony takes. Cocktail hour followed, and it had two things we do not see often: an aerialist performing over the guests, and a champagne tower being poured.

The reception was in the Library. We filmed the room at seven, before anyone was allowed in, and at a quarter past the two of them had it to themselves for the reveal. Then the MC's welcome, a grand entrance, a toast, and dinner with a string quartet playing through the courses. The speeches were spread out: the maid of honour and his parents after the first course, her mom and stepdad after the second, her father after the main, and then the two of them. The cake cutting and champagne pour happened between courses without being announced, which is our favourite way to film one.

After dessert, Leah went upstairs and changed into a second dress in the ten minutes the planner had allowed. The dance floor opened on a couple of slow songs, and then the DJ announced them as husband and wife for their first dance, Leah in the new dress. The photo booth ran until midnight. All of it is what a documentary highlight film is built from: the planned moments, and the ones nobody wrote down.

The one-minute version

The highlight film above is the one Leah and Alexander will watch on anniversaries. This is the one they posted the week after the wedding. We cut a one-minute vertical teaser from the same footage, built for Instagram and TikTok: no titles, no slow build, straight into the day, the length people actually watch on a phone.

The two do different jobs. The highlight is the keepsake, delivered a few months after the wedding when the edit is right. The teaser is for the week after, when everyone who was there is still talking about it and everyone who was not is asking.
