Casa Loma Wedding Video | Shayla & Gabe

Real weddings · Toronto

Shayla and Gabe got married in the Conservatory at Casa Loma on a Saturday in July, with a string quartet playing video game themes and two corgis as ring bearers. Then everyone went to Snakes & Lattes on College, a board game café, for a reception with dice games on every table, Magic: The Gathering packs as prizes, and a garter toss where the garter was a collector's pack.

This is the highlight film from that day. We film documentary style, without re-staging, and a day this specific is exactly why: nobody needed us to make it look like a wedding. It already looked like them.

The story of the day

The morning was in a condo on the lakeshore, with the wedding party spread across the party room and a unit upstairs. Shayla's dress was made by one of her bridesmaids, who was there doing the last touch-ups on it, and her sister-in-law did her hair. Gabe's side had a friend doing his, and a suit with personalized embroidery on the inside. At a quarter to eleven the two of them had a first look on the eleventh-floor terrace, alone, with the lake behind them. Then a limo to the castle.

Casa Loma at noon. A string quartet played as guests arrived, and the playlist was anime and video game music arranged for strings, which is the first thing you hear in the film and the first sign of what kind of day it was going to be. Gabe had a moment with his grandmother before the ceremony. At half past twelve, the wedding party came down the aisle of the Conservatory, then the flower girls with the two corgi ring bearers, then Shayla with her father. Readings, vows, rings, and the recessional.

Afterwards there was an hour of photos in the Conservatory and the Library, a moment for Shayla alone with her mom in the bridal suite, and a surprise the two of them had planned for their wedding party. Guests were given the castle's audio tour and the run of the place until it was time to leave. That gap between ceremony and reception is where a lot of couples lose their guests; here it was a feature.

Snakes & Lattes at half past four. The DJ's welcome address explained the rules: every table had a set of 3D-printed dice, and each face was an icebreaker, from thumb war to animal impressions. There were riddles, with Magic: The Gathering packs for whoever solved them. The guestbook was a table where guests drew their own Magic cards, one to keep and one for the couple. There was a photobooth, and a round of couples bingo where the prize was a 3D-printed dragon dice tower from the head table.

The wedding party entered with a fun walk, the couple entered with a dance, and the cake was cut at the head table. Then the maid of honour and Gabe's best women spoke, the wedding party presented the surprises they had been working on for weeks, and dinner was a choice of flatbread pizza or tacos. Shayla's mom spoke, the two of them gave their thanks, and a dessert bar opened. If you are planning a day that does not look like a template, the question is not whether a videographer can keep up. It is whether they will try to make it look like everyone else's. Our guide to how to choose a wedding videographer is about that.

The shoe game came at half past seven, then the garter toss, where Gabe threw a Magic: The Gathering collector's pack instead of a garter, and the bouquet toss after it. First dance, then Shayla with her parents and Gabe with his, and the DJ opened the floor with an Afrobeats set. From there the night split between the dance floor and the board games, with jasmine tea as the favour and grilled cheese bites at ten. All of it is what a documentary highlight film is built from: the planned moments, and the ones nobody wrote down.
