Casa Loma is the wedding venue people outside Toronto have heard of, and on a Saturday at the end of May it was Carly and Robertson's. Their day started with a first look on the front lawn of her parents' house in North York, then moved to the castle for portraits, a six o'clock ceremony, cocktails, and a reception that kept the first dance for the end of the night.
This is the highlight film from that day. We film documentary style, without re-staging, which at a venue this photographed mostly means resisting the urge to make it look like a postcard and filming the people instead.

The story of the day
Carly got ready at her parents' house in North York, with hair and makeup starting early and the house full by late morning. Two things on the planner's list for that stretch tell you a lot about the day: a photo with her dog before she got into the dress, and her mom helping her into it. Robertson and the groomsmen got ready at the W Toronto downtown, then a limo brought them north to the house.
The first look was on the front lawn, and we had the drone up for it. A first look at home is different from one at a venue. Nobody is on a clock yet, the street is quiet, and the reaction is the reaction. Bridal portraits and immediate family photos followed on the lawn before everyone left for the castle at half past two.
Casa Loma gave them the whole afternoon before the ceremony: bridal party photos on arrival, portraits outside and in the bridal suite, and a few in the elevator, which sounds like an odd item on a shot list until you see the elevator. Immediate family photos ran on both sides, and then Carly went up to the suite while guests arrived by shuttle from the hotel. The ceremony was at six. Half an hour, then straight into cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while the reception room was finished. At a quarter past seven came the room reveal: first the two of them alone, then their parents brought in to see it. We film the reveal every time we can. It is the one moment all night the couple gets to be guests in their own room.
The intros led into the reception, and Carly's brothers were the MCs, so the welcome speech had some history behind it. The maid of honour and best man spoke, and then the speeches were spread through dinner: her parents after the first course, his parents and then the two of them after the main. Sunset photos were pencilled in between, weather allowing. The cake came out with dessert.
Then the part of the schedule we liked most. The mother and son dance, the father and daughter dance, and the first dance all came at a quarter to ten, after dinner and speeches were done, right before the floor opened. Putting the first dance at the end of the formal programme means the room is warm, everyone is already up, and the dance floor opens on the same song. Late-night food came out after that. All of it is what a documentary highlight film is built from: the planned moments, and the ones nobody wrote down.
