The Arlington Estate in Kleinburg was the second half of Jessica and Arash's wedding day. The first half was a church ceremony at Saint Clare of Assisi in Woodbridge and bridal party photos at Vaughan City Hall. The Arlington took the evening: a sofreh ceremony, cocktail hour, and a reception that ran well past midnight.

This is the highlight film from that day. We film documentary style, without re-staging, which on a day that moves through four locations mostly means keeping up and staying out of the way.

The story of the day

Both of them got ready at home, Jessica in Vaughan and Arash in North York, with our coverage starting late in the morning at both. Jessica's side had the fuller morning: details and the dress, the bridesmaids in their robes, and then, once she was in her gown, a private reveal with her dad before she came downstairs to her mom, the rest of the family, and the bridesmaids. That reveal with her dad is the kind of moment we would never ask anyone to repeat, which is exactly why we make sure we are already in the room for it.

The ceremony was at Saint Clare of Assisi Church in Woodbridge, early in the afternoon. A church ceremony gives a film something an outdoor one often does not: a fixed, quiet frame, sound that carries, and a walk down the aisle that everyone in the building turns to watch. Afterwards, the whole guest list gathered outside the church for one large group photo before the bridal party moved on.

An hour of bridal party photos at Vaughan City Hall filled the gap between the church and the estate. City Hall is a good choice for that stretch: open, clean lines, and close to both. A day with this much portrait time is also a good example of why video and photography do different jobs on the same afternoon. While the photographer works the shot list, we are watching the bridal party in between shots, which is usually where the film's best material comes from.

Everyone arrived at The Arlington Estate around four. Couple and family photos came first, then the two of them freshened up for the sofreh ceremony, which started at five in front of a spread the family had laid out. Twenty-five minutes, seated, with the people closest to them gathered around. Some of the family stayed back afterwards for photos in front of the sofreh while the rest went up to cocktail hour.

Cocktail hour was in the west wing lobby with live music, and a saxophone player joined for the second half. While guests were up there, the ceremony room was flipped, with the flowers from the sofreh carried up to the reception. Then a private room reveal: ten minutes for Jessica and Arash alone in the finished space before the doors opened. We always film the reveal. It is the one time all night the couple gets to see the room the way their guests are about to.

The reception started at seven with grand entrances and the first dance, then grace led by the flower girl and ring boy. The speeches were spread across the courses: the best man and maid of honour after the first course, then Jessica's dad and brother followed by the father and daughter dance, then Arash's dad and brother followed by the mother and son dance. Between the main course and dessert, the two of them stepped outside for sunset photos.

Dessert came with a knife dance, the cake cutting, and a thank-you speech from the couple. The dance floor opened at a quarter past nine, a late-night station opened at ten fifteen, and the night ran to one in the morning. All of it is what a documentary highlight film is built from: the moments that were on the schedule, and the ones that were not.
