Waterstone Estate & Farms sits on a working farm at the north edge of Newmarket, and on a Saturday in May it held the whole of Megan and Felipe's wedding: getting ready, a tea ceremony with family, the ceremony in the Heritage Barn, cocktail hour on the grounds, and the reception in the Clubhouse.

This is the highlight film from that day. We film documentary style, with no re-staging, which on a day with this many moving parts mostly means paying attention to what happens between the scheduled moments.

The story of the day

The morning was split, which is common and which we plan for. Felipe got ready with his family at a place they had rented nearby in East Gwillimbury, and that is where our coverage started, late in the morning, before everyone drove over to the venue together. Megan's morning was on site, in the bridal suite at Waterstone with her bridesmaids and her mom, hair and makeup running through the early afternoon. Two locations means two of us, so neither side of the family's morning gets shortchanged.

Early in the afternoon, Megan and Felipe had a first look on the grounds and read private vows to each other before anyone else was around. Family photos followed.

Then came the part of the day that was most their own: a tea ceremony with their parents, grandparents, and extended family, held before guests arrived. Megan changed into a tea ceremony dress for it, tea was served to the elders, red pockets were collected, and afterwards she changed back into her gown. It was quiet and unhurried, and it had the kind of faces you only get in a room that is mostly family.

The ceremony was in the Heritage Barn. A harpist played while guests found their seats, and the processional had a guest of honour: Cotton, Megan's dog, who walked in ahead of the wedding party and was driven home straight after. Felipe walked in with both of his parents, and Megan with both of hers. A barn like this one does a lot of the work in a film, between the timber and the light coming through it. We mostly try not to get in its way.

Cocktail hour moved over to the Clubhouse and out onto the grounds. Waterstone is a farm and the couple leaned into it: they had booked time with the horse and carriage for photos, and brought carrots so guests could feed the horses. Lawn games were out, an audio guestbook was set up, and the light over the fields at that hour in May is a big part of why we like filming here.

The reception in the Clubhouse followed a shape we see often and always like. Introductions, first dance, and the cake cutting came first, and then the speeches were spread across the courses rather than stacked into one block. Megan's maid of honour gave the welcome toast, Felipe's sister and Megan's brother spoke, and both sets of parents spoke before the father and daughter dance and the mother and son dance. Spacing speeches out keeps the room's energy up, and it gives us cleaner audio and better reactions than one long run at the microphone. Between the main course and dessert, the two of them slipped out for golden hour photos, with a second outfit for Megan. Then the thank-you speech, a group photo on the dance floor, and a red pocket throw in place of a bouquet toss. The dance floor opened just before nine, and there were birria tacos for the late-night crowd. All of that is what a documentary highlight film gets built from: the planned moments, and the ones nobody wrote down.
